Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and inspired by the arts. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could commit her time to writing, reading, theater and other interests. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was well-educated and encouraged how to express herself through the arts. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled watching the historic Civil Rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspired her to create a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to look over the residence of one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to take a look at their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism duties, and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in an unassuming production studio after her graduation. After this, she founded her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her company launched a range of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
